A “massive explosion” hit South Auckland on today, with firefighters now battling a blaze at a scrap metal factory.
The fire service was alerted to the explosion just before 7pm.
A fire service spokesman said they received dozens of reports of a massive explosion that have been heard and felt right through Manakau city, on both sides of the motorway.
On arrival in the area, fire crews located a blaze at National Steel on Hobill Avenue, Wiri.
Nine fire crews have been sent to the area and police and ambulance were also on the ground.
The fire spokesman said there had been no reports of injuries.
