Thirty-nine year old Steven Santiago is being hailed as a good Samaritan after being hit by a train while trying to get another man out of harm’s way in New York on Sunday.
The spokesman for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Kevin Ortiz, told the Staten Island Advance that that Santiago had gone to the aid of a drunken man who was trying to retrieve his shoe from the tracks, when he was hit by the train at about 1:30 a. m.
While the drunken man was not seriously injured, Santiago is in critical condition.
“He is in a pretty bad shape right now,” His elder brother, Edwin, told the New York Daily News. “I leave it in God’s hands.
“He is a great man who risked his life to save someone he doesn’t even know.”
