David Shearer wins NZ Labour leadership

Former UN official David Shearer is the new leader of the New Zealand Labour Party, with Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson as his deputy.

Shearer was considered the favourite with the public, and after news broke on InvestigateDaily that his rival David Cunliffe had been implicated in an immigration scandal.

Details of the story wre brought to the attention of the Labour caucus at the weekend, and Cunliffe was later reported by the Herald complaining about a controversial “niggle” in the background that he called “foul play”.

It’s not yet known how close the vote was.
