PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Jan. 17 (UPI) —
A runaway dump truck careened into a bus and then veered into pedestrians in Haiti, killing at least 29 people and injuring 56 others, an official said Tuesday.
Nadia Lochard of Haiti’s Civil Protection Office said the crash occurred shortly before midnight Monday on one of Port-au-Prince’s busiest streets when the dump truck loaded with gravel lost its brakes, The Miami Herald reported.
It totally destroyed everything in its path, Frederick Alexis, a freelance photographer who was at the scene, told the Herald. “There were partially destroyed, mangled bodies everywhere.
It got the BBQ chicken lady, the fritay vendors; motorcycles, cars.
The crash also drew Haitian President Michel Martelly and Prime Minister Garry Conille to the scene, the newspaper said. Martelly later visited with some of the injured at a hospital.
