People still trapped in wreckage of train

Lives still hang in the balance as rescuers desperately try to pull people from the wreckage of a train after it derailed outside the northern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela, killing at least 77 people and injuring more than 100.

The train was carrying more than 200 passengers and crew when four of the carriages overturned.

Seventy-three bodies had been recovered from the site, and four others had died in hospital, said Spanish officials.

“It was going so quickly … It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other,” Ricardo Montesco, a passenger,  told Cadena Ser radio station.

“A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out and we realised the train was burning … I was in the second wagon and there was fire … I saw corpses,” he said.
