A police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston has been shot dead, as his colleagues track a gunman on campus. Some reports suggest there are two suspects, and there are unconfirmed eyewitness reports of at least one explosion.

It’s not known if the shooting is linked to the hunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

The shooting happened at 10.48pm local time.

MIT is just across the river from the scene of the bombing that killed three and wounded nearly 180.

The FBI today released photos of two suspects in the bombing and warned they were considered “armed and dangerous” and should not be approached.
