New Zealand Police carrying out a swoop for the FBI on Megaupload founder Kim Schmitz found sawn-off shotguns as well as loot when they executed search warrants this morning.
Police, acting on a mutual assistance request from the US Department of Justice, sealed off all the entrances to New Zealand’s most expensive property, the $35 million Chrisco mansion currently leased by Kim Schmitz, aka Kim Dotcom, and Kim Tim Jim Vestor.
Assets worth more than $20 million are believed to have been frozen, including luxury cars, bank accounts and expensive artwork.
MegaUpload and its management are accused of violating money-laundering and copyright laws in a US organised crime investigation.
Schmitz and his three co-accused are appearing in the North Shore District Court at Albany this afternoon.
The US investigation is linked to an Investigate magazine special report from two years ago.
